BAHR
We were asked to accept the challenge to develop a 360º project for Bairro Alto Hotel 5th floor. To create a restaurant. The restaurant. Bairro Alto Hotel is at the heart of Lisbon and already won 6 prizes for the best Europe 5 star boutique Hotel. Eduardo Souto Moura, a Pritzker prize award winner, was to develop the rest of the architecture renewal and construction of the expantion of the hotel. We had to rebuilt the entire 5th floor, create all the interior architecture from scratch. As it is a building from the XVIII century, we found many unexpected surprises. We had to develop everything, naming, image, decoration, designing furniture, decoration, artwork. The whole shabang.

CONCEPT
Bairro Alto is 500 plus years old. Since then it has been the place of choice for the great Portuguese geniuses to “drink” their inspiration that translates in all their work. It is an honor for us to to be a part of the local history of this place that we cherish so much.
The concept we developed for this project is an homage to all the artists that drinked, lived and died here. It is to the ones we admire.
It is an homage to Bairro Alto. The soul of Lisbon.
BOHEMIAN MANIFEST
Bohemian:
a person who is interested in artistic and unusual things, for example art, music, or literature, and lives in an informal way that ignores the usually accepted ways of behaving.

Manifesto:
Weapon used by artists to present their principles and intentions.
It represents irreverence, the breaking of a cycle, the beginning of a new chain.

For all that happened and will happen in Bairro Alto.
How the manifest is manifested:
Through the subversion of traditional and characteristic elements of Lisbon.
Applying, with a sense of humor, its reinterpretation within the irreverence and originality of these artists.

The Bohemian manifesto is a transversal element to the personalities that have marked our history and elevated our culture.
To whom we owe so much.
To those who created eternal works, developed between each glass of wine.
BRIEFING
We were asked to do something disruptive but elegant, cool but sophisticated. Something unique with it's own personality. Thestudio presented the concept: Bohemian Manifest. Bairro Alto neighborhood, in Lisbon, is more than 500 years old. Known for it's bohemian night life, since early times. We focused on the most notorious bohemian Portuguese artists that lived and died there throughout history. With Thestudio's approach and design language.
MANIFESTO BOÉMIO
Challenges:

Creating and producing big dimensions art installations for the venue. Designing and producing exterior and interior furniture. Finding the tree, that was cut 40 years ago, for the 14 meters long bar counter. The huge marble block for the 9 meters kitchen counter. All different suppliers to manage.
CONSTRUCTION

Finding the tree, that was cut 40 years ago, for the 14 meters long bar counter. The huge marble block for the 9 meters kitchen counter. All different suppliers to manage.
STUDIES
Outcome:

I'll use some reviews from the trial opening to talk about results:
"The best restaurant in Lisbon. Cool but sophisticated ambiance..." (Claire Havet). "Amazing to see all the effort put into every detail, brilliant design and quality!"(John Tegner). "excited to find a most elegant, modern enjoyable atmosphere, vibrant and fashionable..."(Yael Meni). We manage to develop something original and unique.

CONCEPT
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Set in an 18th century building overlooking Lisbon’s historical centre and the river tejo, the hotel has an absolutely unbeatable location that sets it apart from all other hotels.
More then its pristine service and charming interiors, we wanted to focus on its unique location: the heart of lisbon, with all its bustling activity, restaurants, stores and historical flair, where everything happens.
In essence: WHERE LISBON IS
So we recreated the historical city’s grid, playfully including iconic elements that make part of Lisbon’s imaginary and personality.

DE SOUSA
Germano de Sousa Laboratories asked us to do an intervention of their headquarters in lisbon.
The briefing showed us what a great project it could be right from the start.
Germano de Sousa presented us their values, where they came from and whar they believed in and gave us total creative freedom.
The final outcome surpassed all expectations.
What better proof then to be invited again to do the 1.300 sq. ft. of window display of their northern headquarters in Oporto’s main avenue?
Great people, great client.

Medical laboratories are all about science, about research, knowledge and
the health of the patient.
We wanted the intervention to be part of the architecture. telling the history of medicine since antiquity, combining art with architecture.
Taking advantage of the luminosity that came through the glass roof and windows, we worked with layers of acrylic plates, metals and print, mixed with king size laboratory material.
The result is a mix of materials with changing reflections and shadows.

ON THE ROAD
One more love affair chapter. We never forget our first love and in this case we never forget our first client. We made it with love.
Being on the road, getting inspiration everywhere, mixing everything, loving everyone, kind of corny but so filled with life.
Poems like 'Having a coke with you' by Frank O'Hara, sayings by Rivera and pure nonsense. Those were the ingredients of this project.
Using my daughter Kiara and Bárbara's daughter Carlota made us work and care even more. I always enjoy every detail of this project.
We had fun creating and producing. Thanks Bárbara Osório for such a great time.

BETWEEN
Another chapter of our love affair. We used to get together with Bárbara Osório, see the new fabric collection and develop ideas for the season.
In this case Bárbara wanted to present the fabric textures, up close.
We had to come up with an idea that would allow us to create deep appealing images translating the overall concept.
So, details was the word. And life is about paying attention to the little things. If we look up close we'll find the beauty in them.
We wrote a few sentences related to that idea and sow them on the fabrics.Note: Oh that's me on the bike and with the camera. Bárbara is with the trolley. :D

PROMEMORIA
When Romeo Sozzi, founder and CEO of luxury furniture brand Promemoria,
called us to meet him in Lecco, Italy, we jumped to the idea of working with
one of the great italian designers.
He felt that many of his clients had conservative views regarding the combination of colours and textures of the fabrics he worked with.
Romeo challenged us to create a catalogue that would show the range of the brand’s fabrics and what one could do with them.

THE ALCHEMIST
We came up with the idea of an alchemist roaming through nature, collecting every sort of elements into a box to transform them into extravagant fabrics.
We had to collect sticks, stones, plants, snails for several days and miles.
We were left with bruises, moskito bites and this catalogue.

Every man made object can be traced to nature.

MUSA
The briefing was to create a brand that would be used on different beauty accessory items. The initial market was Australia.
The concept and naming that we developed said everything we wanted to communicate.

MUSA:
A source of artistic inspiration. In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. Today, a muse is a person who serves as an artist's inspiration. Often filmmakers talk about a certain actor being a muse — meaning the actor inspired a movie. Writers, painters, musicians, and other artists have muses. Muse can also refer to thinking deeply.

Who wouldn't want to be a Muse? This is the graphic result.

18.68
Located in Lisbon’s cosmopolitan Chiado district, you’ll find the cocktail bar 18.68 in what was located the formely oldest fire station in Europe.
We where asked to create the brand from scratch.
Starting with the concept we came up with the name 18.68, the year the fire station was founded. As a tribute we created a concept and graphic universe that pays hommage to the closely intertwined history of this space.

Over 150 years ago, the year was 1868, notorious lisbon dandy Agusto Macieira saved Madame Carlota single-handedly from her burning salon in Lisbon.
Overwhelmed by his own deed, he then and there decided to found the first volunteer firefighter corporation in
Europe. Or so goes the story.
Inspired by illustrations of the time, we spinned our tale further creating nonsensical characters and situations. Perfect for 18.68 clients to look at them over a perfect cocktail. Cheers.
